Day 181 - Custer / The Black Hills

Distance travelled (by bike): 23,650

A great day exploring the black mountains and surrounding area without the panniers on. The first port of call was Mount Rushmore. I have to admit, i was a little disappointed, having seen it in movies, on TV and in pictures i expected a little more. There is no doubt that the carvings are quite amazing, but not quite as spectacular as i imagined or was led to believe.
From Mount Rushmore i spent the day riding the scenic routes and trails through the Black Mountains. One of the highlights of the day was seeing the buffalo roaming in wild in the parks. These things are huge, i have no idea how the plains indians managed to kill them with arrows and spears. I now see why there is a speed limit in the park, I think if i drove into a buffalo they would carry on with what they were doing, thinking they had a little indigestion.
The routes were stunning, tunnels carved through the mountain, bridges curving under themselves, animals standing watching you and dirt roads leading to isolated lakes (or buffalo watering holes).
