Day 137 - Oaxaca/Monte Alban

Distance travelled (by bike): 15,100

I stayed in Oaxaca for the day, to do some maintenance on the bike and visit the Monte Alban ruins, a world heritage site.
Monte Alban was an easy ride from the city. Monte Alban is located on the top of a mountain overlooking the surrounding valley. Originally pre Columbian, the site constantly changed through the ages. Today the site, only part excavated, documents the layers of history, one culture using the previous cultures buildings for foundations for their new larger dwellings.  The city was abandoned around 750AD having lost its political pre-eminence. the site ay Monte Alban has had huge problems with looters, the surrounding area, which is also protected is still suffering form looting.
Last night i met two american bikers (Tom and Alex) heading south from the states to Argentina and an Australian (Sam) who is travelling mexico for a month. Sam took us to the meat market for dinner, amazing. You had to go and choose the meat from one of the stalls, they then cook it on a BBQ, you then have to go to another stand and buy tacos, vegetables, salsa, guacamole etc. then find a table. Once seated the meat, veg etc are bought to you in a basket. We were the only gringos in the market. Excellent meal, thanks Sam.
