Day 130 - Belize City/Caye Caulker

Getting the ferry to Caye Caulker from Belize city takes abound hour and something, but this is Belize and everyone runs on their own time so you have to give or take half an hour. Caye Caulker is one the islands making up 212miles sq. of cages and is only 5 miles long and 1 mile wide. The only transport on the island are golf buggies, the roads sandy paths (no motor vehicles allowed, i tried to get the bike across but no joy). This was the Caribbean, white beaches, blue sea and the reef 500m from the shore. The Island is a mecca for diving and snorkelling, with bars restaurants and hotels (non more than 3 stories) lining the beaches. Other than the diving the islands main passed time seems to be relaxing, drinking and smoking (not the type of cigarettes you can buy across the counter) inevitably the atmosphere is really easy going and friendly.
Returning to Belize city i had dinner with the hostel owner and his friend/employee, both of whom i found out had been serious drug users, but managed to detox (now more dependant on the booze), both had been in prison and both now strongly believed in the mystic powers of the tarot cards. The owner told me that he was going to devote the next 3 days to his rock collection before heading off to set up a grow off (grow off is a large scale cultivation of marijuana), while is mate was going to drop off the grid and live in a  Mennonite community . A bizarre evening.
