Day 68 - Galapagos (Santa Cruz)

Having sailed overnight to Santa Cruz we disembarked to hunt giant tortoises, originally we were meant to visit the Charles Darwin research station but it was closed due to flooding caused by the tsunami. After a hike the giant tortoises are located, they are huge, they can weigh up to 500lbs and can live to 200. Well worth the hike.

The afternoon is spent trekking through lava tunnels, created millions of years ago the is roughly 100-200 metres below ground and stretches over a mile. Close to the lava tunnel is a huge sink hole, over half a mile in diameter and half a kilometre deep, absolutely huge, very impressive.
